Obituary for Zachary Thomas Cochran

Zachary Thomas Cochran of Petal died Thursday, August 30, 2018 following a hard fought battle with addiction.
Zach was born February 17, 1989. He leaves behind the light of his life, his daughter Lily Grace Cochran, who is 8 years old. He is survived by his parents, Connie (Rushton) Wheat and Jimmy Wheat of Petal and Mitch and Marcia Cochran of Oak Grove. Also surviving Zach are his sister and brother-in-law Alison (Cochran) Stevens and Rick Stevens; his step brothers Matt Beam, Jason Beam, and Brad Wheat (Kim); and step sisters Amy Beam and Lauren Wheat. He had two nephews and one niece as well as aunts, uncles, and cousins who will miss him greatly. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Herbert and Jean Rushton of Petal and paternal grandparents Ollie and Hazel Cochran.
Zach attended Petal schools from kindergarten through eleventh grade and graduated high school from Aspen Ranch in Loa, Utah, in 2007. He graduated with honors from the University of Southern Mississippi with a Bachelor’s Degree in Polymer Science (minors in chemistry and mathematics) in 2015, also receiving the A. L. Hendry Award. He was the author of several patents and one peer-reviewed paper.
Zach was currently employed as a Product Engineer with emphasis in robotics at PG Technologies. Prior employment included Rawlins Research Group, an internship at General Electric Aviation, and the Mississippi Polymer Institute at the University of Southern Mississippi.
Zach enjoyed sports, most recently coaching Lily in soccer. He was an avid armchair coach to the Golden State Warriors as well, leading them to numerous victories. He had a love of music, art, and science, which he shared with his daughter
Anyone who knew Zach quickly recognized his quiet genius and quick wit, as well as his ever-present clever humor. He will best be remembered as a loving friend who was loyal, kind, and always in search of ways to give to others. Due to his struggle with addiction, he had compassion for the suffering of others and was always ready to give support, a toothbrush, clothes, or a place to stay. He lived out the belief “We keep what we have only by giving it away.” He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. Visitation is Wednesday, September 5, from 9:30-11:30 with service and burial to follow at Carterville Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers please honor Zach’s love of animals by donating to Southern Pines Animal Shelter, www.southernpinesanimalshelter.org.
