Obituary for Voncile Prine Ratcliff

Voncile Prine Ratcliff passed away on January 7, 2018, at her home surrounded by her family. Mrs. Ratcliff is survived by her husband of 71 years, Clifton E. “Red” Ratcliff, Sr., of Hattiesburg; five children, Clifton E. “Eddie” Ratcliff, Jr., of Hattiesburg; Vivian Ratcliff Fitzpatrick of Hattiesburg, Joseph Martin “Marty” Ratcliff (Susan), of Slidell, LA; James Tedrick “Ted” Ratcliff (Cindy), of Brookhaven/Starkville; and Jason Daniel “Dan” Ratcliff (Shelli), of Indiana. Mrs. Ratcliff is also survived by ten grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as a sister, Mrs. Harry K. “Monita” McLemore of Brandon, MS. Mrs. Ratcliff was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Leroy Alby Prine, Sr., and Mrs. Velma Kinsey Prine, and two brothers, Leroy Alby “L.A.” Prine, Jr. and Austin Prine.
Mrs. Ratcliff was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who spent most of her life in Petal and Hattiesburg. After graduating from Petal High School in 1948, where she was among the first delegates from this area to be sent to the Mississippi Girl’s State, Mrs. Ratcliff went on to start an active life in the community where she had a successful catering business, Voncile’s Cakes and Catering, of 25 years, while also working in and leading numerous organizations. In her early years in the community (1950’s), she enjoyed teaching the “Young People’s Class” at Central Baptist Church, where she first developed her love of working and guiding young lives. Additionally, Mrs. Ratcliff was a life-long member of the Order of the Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matron several times and numerous Star Points. She also was a member of Daughter’s of the Nile, and an adult state and local leader of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls for over 50 years. Her early years of working with young people gave her the passion to help the youth in her community through participating in her five childrens’ school functions and organizations. Her love of Rainbow was one of her life’s greatest works, after that of being a loving wife and mother.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 9, from 6 to 8 p.m., and funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 10, 2018, at Moore Funeral Home.
