Obituary for Sam H. "Sam" Gilkey

Samuel H. Gilkey, known to friends and family as “Sam”, passed away on May 25th, 2018 at the age of 77. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, June 1, 2018 at the Hattiesburg Chapel of Moore Funeral Home with interment in Highland Cemetery to follow. Visitation for Sam will from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Friday prior to the service.

Sam is survived by, (Son) Timothy Hugh Gilkey of Biloxi, Ms. (Daughter) Stephanie Leigh Richard of Ocean Springs, Ms. (Son) Thomas Patrick Gilkey of Hattiesburg, Ms. (Son) Samuel Hardy Gilkey of Hattiesburg, Ms. (Son) Benjamin Nicholas Gilkey of Hattiesburg, Ms. (Grandson) Joseph Hugh Gilkey of Hattiesburg, Ms, (Granddaughter) Brittany Gayle Griffin of Ocean Springs, Ms. (Niece) Brenda Mitchell of Ocean Springs, Ms.

A lifelong residence of Hattiesburg, Ms., Sam attended Hattiesburg High School, where he graduated on May 22nd, 1959. Sam attended the University of Southern Mississippi, formerly known as “Mississippi Southern”, where he was a member of the R.O.T.C. Drill Team.

In the late 1960’s, Sam began his career in the Electrical Supply Industry. During his career, he had the opportunity to work for Hawkins Electric Supply, Interstate Electric Supply, and Robinson Electric Supply, before opening Gilkey Electric Supply Co. on May 31st, 1983.

Sam had many friends and colleagues who served as mentors to him during his early days of business. One in particular was the late Arthur M. (Art) Spencer. Mr. Spencer was a Lighting Mfg Rep. Sam spent a lot of Art’s knowledge and wisdom in some of his own business practices, which served him well over the years. Sam thought of Art as one of his best friends, as well as one of the most insightful mentors of the business.

Sam enjoyed life. His favorite past time was spending time in the Gulf of Mexico, salt water fishing with his family and friends aboard his boat “SEABRAT” Sam and his friends, as well as family, share some of their fondest memories in the Gulf.

Sam is preceded in death by (Father) T. H. “Hugh” Gilkey, (Mother) Opal Elizabeth Creel, (Sister) Gloria Inez Speed, and (Dear Friend) Billy F. Lott.

Sam will be fondly remembered by his previous and current employees.
