Obituary for Ondell Estelle Downs Keith

Ondell D. Keith, 90, of Dixie Community passed away November 5, 2017 at Asbury Hospice House. She was affectionally known as “Granny” Ondell by her family and came from a long line of Grannies. She was born to the late Robert and Lena Downs, July 9, 1927, in Dixie Community. She was the only girl with five brothers. Ondell graduated from Forrest County Agricultural High School in 1946. She married the late Marvin “Pug” Keith in 1948. He was the love of her life.
Ondell initially worked for Bell Telephone Company as a switchboard operator during World War II. She worked outside the home as a director of a preschool, preschool teacher, cafeteria worker, and in an envelope factory during the time she reared her children. After her husband’s death in 1979, she worked at Methodist/Wesley Hospital as a hospital operator until her retirement at age 75. She had many dear friends there who continued to visit her often after her retirement.
Granny put her family first. She loved nothing better than having family and friends around her and celebrating life with a good meal of fried chicken. Granny loved Jesus. She was an active member of Dixie Baptist Church, and her Ladies’ Sunday School Class members were special friends.
Ondell is survived by two children: Linda (Robert) Hudson and Steve (Judy) Keith of Dixie Community. She had one granddaughter, Robin (Mason) Burge and six grandsons: Clint (Ginny) Hudson, Sean (Thelma) Keith, Tony (Shante) Keith, Adam Keith, David (Val) Pahlman, and Steven (Kim) Pahlman. Her eight great grandsons and eight great granddaughters had a special bond with “Granny”. Aunt Ondell had a host of nieces and nephews who treated her like another grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Noreen Keith; and three of her brothers: Herbert, Roscoe, and Dempsey Downs.
Pall bearers included grandsons and great grandsons: David Pahlman, Steven Pahlman, Tony Keith, Clint Hudson, Mason Burge, and Tillman Burge.
A visitation will be held from 5 until 8 PM at Moore Funeral Home, Hattiesburg. Visitation will be held from 9AM until 10 AM with funeral to follow at 10 AM Dixie Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Dixie Community Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Dixie Baptist Church.
The family wishes to offer special appreciation to Jo Allen Carroll, Ashbury Hospice House, and Bedford Care Monroe Hall for their loving care of Ondell.
