Obituary for Malcolm Lewis English

Malcolm Lewis English was a father, avid golfer, member of the hole-in-one club, fly fisherman, expert fly-tier, and a friend of Bill. He was born in Quitman, MS on January 26, 1933 and passed away, in his home, in Hattiesburg, MS., on June 4, 2018. He was the only son of Lewis C. and Stella Beatrice “Bea” Ramsey English.
Malcolm and his family moved to Hattiesburg in January 1940, where he went through the public-school system and was elected as the national president of Phi Kappa Alpha fraternity in 1951. He graduated with a BA in English from Mississippi Southern College, now known as the University of Southern Mississippi, in 1955. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha (KA) order and a life-long supporter of USM… Go Eagles!
He joined the Hattiesburg Impalas, an American Legion baseball team in 1950, where he played second base, with short-stop Mickey Harrington, assisting the team in winning 19 straight games!
Malcolm was commissioned in the United States Army, and served from 1955-1957, earning the rank of First Lieutenant. Upon returning to Hattiesburg, he entered the Life Insurance business, working in that field from December 1, 1957 to shortly before his death.
Malcolm was a flawed man of abiding faith and served as deacon of the First Presbyterian Church and was a proud member of the Leonard Lowrey Sunday School Class.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Madeline “Tip” English Bond of New Orleans, LA; and his wife of 52 years, Mary Elizabeth Coleman English.
He is survived by his sons, Malcolm Lewis English, Jr. (Laurie) of Glenmora, LA; Dr. Andrew Ramsey English (Sara) of Blair, SC; Jonathan Paul “Jay” English of Hattiesburg, MS; Mark Patrick English of Hattiesburg, MS; and his grandson, Matthew Francis Lewis English (Trinity) of Glenmora, LA. He is also survived by a host of friends, including his best friend of many years, Judith A. Thompson of Pearl River, LA.
Visitation will take place at the First Presbyterian Church of Hattiesburg, from noon until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, 2018, with the service of remembrance, immediately following. In lieu of flowers, Malcolm personally requested that any remembrance be made in donations to the French Camp Academy of French Camp, Mississippi.
A lifelong lover of all animals – especially dogs – Malcolm spoke of looking forward to Heaven and of meeting so many of his friends at the Rainbow Bridge.
**This obituary was dictated by Malcolm, to his daughter-in-law, Sara, in February 2018, as they drank a cup of tea, debated politics, sang a few show tunes, and tackled the problems of the world, deciding to turn off the television, love one another, and agree to disagree.
