Obituary for Dorothy Jewel Richardson

Dorothy Wright Richardson of Austell, Georgia, died on Friday, May 11, 2018. Dorothy was born in Eatonville, Mississippi, on October 15, 1920, the last of five children born to William Johnnie Wright and Evie Bowman Wright. She grew up in the Eatonville area before her family moved to Purvis, Mississippi, where she graduated from high school in 1938.
Dorothy met her future husband at a political rally in Eatonville. She and Clyde Richardson married on February 8. 1941, and began their life together in the Hattiesburg area. Their first child, Ronnie, was born just before Clyde joined the United States Army Air Force in August 1942. He fought in the European Theatre of World War II and was a POW after his bomber was shot down. Once the war ended he returned home to his family.
Dorothy and Clyde both enrolled at Mississippi Southern College after the war. Two more children were born to them, Wanda and Joel. Clyde graduated in 1948 with a degree in education and began a 30-year career in school administration.
That took their family to Polkville, Ovett, Petal, Calhoun, and eventually Rolling Fork, all in Mississippi.
Across these years Dorothy managed their household, raised the children, and was active in the churches they joined in each community where they lived. In Rolling Fork, Dorothy became the secretary for the County Agent and enjoyed 17 years of serving the community.
After retiring they moved back to Eatonville where they lived for the next thirty years. During this time they were very active in Providence Baptist Church where they both taught Sunday School classes.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents and her four siblings, Plurabelle, Willie, Maggie and Lola; her husband of 67 years, Clyde; son, Ronnie; and granddaughter, Leigh R. Hill.
She is survived by her daughter, Wanda R. Hale (Lonnie) and son, Joel E. Richardson (Ingrid). She is also survived by her grandchildren: Suzanne Richardson Boccihjno (Peter), Ron Richardson II, Jodie Richardson, Kim Keyes (Matt), Lonnie B. Hale (Jenn), Jessica Richardson Riffaterre (Jason), and Benjamin T. Richardson (Rebecca) and 13 great grandchildren.

A visitation with the family will begin at 12:30 prior to the service at Moore’s Chapel. Burial will follow at the cemetery of Providence Baptist Church in Eatonville, Mississippi.
