Obituary for Andrew Cooper Clayton

Andrew Cooper Clayton, 40, Drew, to his family and close friends, died on October 31st at Asbury Hospice House in Hattiesburg, MS. Drew was the much loved husband, father, son, brother, grandson, son-in-law and friend to everyone who had the opportunity to know him.

Services for Andrew Cooper Clayton will be held on Monday, November 6th at Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Friends and family are invited to attend visitation from 2:00 – 4:00. The funeral mass will follow from 4:00 – 5:00 and a meal will be served immediately afterwards in the Parish Hall. There will be a private family burial.

Drew was born in Hattiesburg and grew up in Laurel, MS. He graduated from Watkins High School, attended the University of Mississippi, where he pledged Kappa Alpha, and later graduated with a B.S. from the University of Southern Mississippi. During college he was on staff at Baker, Donelson law firm. He was an extremely dedicated and successful member of Sanderson Farms of Laurel, MS, rising to the level of Corporate Sales Manager.

Though his life was not nearly as long as those of us who love him would have ever wished, Drew loved his life and he lived it to the fullest every single day with his adored wife, Taylor, whom he met at a football game in 2003. The first time Taylor saw Drew she asked a college friend who he was and once introduced they were never apart. They married in 2006 and had their beloved girls, Caroline, in 2007, Anna Cooper, in 2009 and Vivi, in 2014. His girls, all four, were his greatest source of happiness and no one was ever in doubt of how much he loved them and how very proud he was of each one. When asked her favorite thing about Drew, Taylor quickly replied “his kindness.” People who knew Drew will honestly say they never heard him say an unkind word or saw him be unkind to anyone.

Drew’s family thanks God for the gift of his precious life. It is hard for us to imagine a day in which we will not see his handsome face, his beautiful smile, hear his laugh or share his wonderful big strong hugs. Drew’s zest for life meant he loved to travel with his family and friends. Through the years, we have all shared many extraordinary times building beautiful memories with him.

Drew was an active member of Saint Fabian Catholic Church and he loved Jesus. He enjoyed golf, football, working in his yard, fishing, going to the beach and most of all being with family and friends. However, nothing was more important to Drew than his children and Taylor and being at their beautiful home they had made together in Hattiesburg.

He will be dearly missed by all of his family, friends and neighbors, many of whom have been friends since his early childhood. His Sanderson Farms family, truly a real family to him, was just as significant in his life. Drew’s winning personality and enormous work ethic ensured that his customers felt cared for and valued as the friends he considered them to be.

Drew is survived by his wife, Mattie Taylor Clayton and their children Mattie Caroline, Anna Cooper and Victoria Kathryn; parents, Cynthia and Ray McNamara of Jackson and Deleica and Gary Clayton of Ellisville; his brother, Kyle C. Clayton, his wife Paige, niece Haze and nephew Grayson of Jackson; his in-laws, Victoria and Francis Mitchell of Ocean Springs; his grandmothers, Eleanor Clayton of Williamsport, PA and Ladye Kathryn Roberts of Oxford, MS; and his extended family of aunts, uncles, and many cousins who loved him. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, James Milnor Clayton, Elliott Vernon Cleveland, Jr., and Nicholas B. Roberts.

Drew’s funeral will be a celebration of his joyous life, and we hope that those who loved him as we do will attend and share their many stories of the wonderful times you shared with our beloved sweet Drew. We ask all to come with a happy heart ready to celebrate the wonderful blessing of Drew’s life.

We thank the wonderful staff of the critical care unit at UMMC and the Asbury Hospice House for their extraordinary care and immense compassion. Friends for life and honorary pallbearers are Steve Bonasia, Adam Bounds, Kyle Clayton, Brad Kent, Eric Parish, Grant Sharpe, Joel Thaxton, Gary West and Brian Wilson.
